I may be an only child, but I’ve been blessed with Godsend sisters who I know I will grow old with. My sister-cousin Ariane has been with me from the beginning. She’s my right and left hands, my front and my back. I love her dearly and thank God he blessed me with this angel. Cousins really are our first friends and our relationship is no exception to the rule. If there is anyone in this world who knows me, this girl does and I thank her for her ultimate commitment to our relationship and her patience when dealing with my “crazy”. Growing up with her has been an amazing journey and I’m excited to be entering into this new chapter of our lives together – hand in hand. While we are each other’s right hand, her left hand is taken up by her newly engaged fiancé Yannic!! Ariane has taken her passion for fashion to the next level and is currently growing in her career as a visual merchandiser at Forever 21.
MAID OF HONOR
From the time I met Coelette at Stony Brook University, I knew there was something about her that would draw us together. Coelette has a heart of gold and will go above and beyond the call of duty for me – that certainly goes unnoticed. She’s been there for me through my proudest moments and my toughest times and for that I am indebted to her. She’s certainly my rock, holding me down always!!! We are the true definition of what sisters are – we fight, we love, we laugh and we live life together, no matter what comes between us. Through our sistership, she’s taught me what unconditional love is and I thank her for that. Lee and I are so fortunate to have both Coelette and her fiancé Akeem by our side. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Outside of being one of my Maids of Honor, Coelette’s most important job is being mommy to my sweet goddaughter Jaleah Jackson and she also serves as Dean of Students at Brownsville Ascend.
MAID OF HONOR
Clarine is the true definition of a partner-in-crime. She and I have been getting in trouble together since our junior high school days. I love Clarine because she keeps me balanced, while allowing me to see the positive side of any situation with a dose of comic relief (there’s a reason why she was voted Class Clown in high school). Clarine has taught a tremendous amount about the importance of family and always staying true to yourself no matter the circumstance. To know Clarine is to love her. She Clarine is mommy to my vivacious goddaughter and also Flower Girl Ava Blair and works as a “teacher”. I say the word teacher very loosely J.
If I gave you an exact day and year that I met Zenica, I would be lying. That’s how long we’ve known each other. Outside of my family, she’s my oldest friend turned sister. We’ve been inseparable since our elementary school days and we still can’t travel throughout our neighborhoods of Clinton Hills and Fort Greene without people either mistaking us for each other or asking “where’s your other half?” From looking alike, dressing alike and having father’s who shared resemblance, there was no way you couldn’t tell me that Zenica and I weren’t true blood sisters. We just thought the doctors made a mistake J. I love this girl more than she knows. Although we may have traveled separate paths in life, we always find our way back to each other. I love her for loving me unconditionally and for pushing me to set my bar high. She’s never settled for less and has taught me to do the same. Outside of being my twin, Zenica has furthered her career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as a Research Manager.
When I joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, I knew I was gaining hundreds of thousands of sorors who would look out for me wherever I was in the world, however, Rosario DKA Rosie holds a very special place in my heart. After joining Delta over 11 years ago, Rosie and I have built a special relationship and bond that could never be broken. To say Rosie is a strong woman is an understatement. Her strength is truly unparalleled and has always kept me going. She’s a go-getter, mommy and one the best sisters a girl could ask for. She’s my reason for being rational in extreme cases and without her I don’t know what I would do. She recently took the best leap of faith and moved to Dallas, TX where she currently working as Director of Operations at a charter school.
One of the sweetest girls I will ever meet! Renee and I have been friends since elementary school and haven’t looked back since. Zenica, Renee and I complete the trio or the “oreo sandwich” as we like to say J. From our junior high school days of dancing and being drum majors together, to then going to Stony Brook University together, Renee will always remain my sister for life. She may not know this, but I thank her wholeheartedly for sharing her core values and beliefs with me. It’s helped me in my life’s journey and I will forever be grateful to her for that. Her tenacity and persistence to achieve has led her to obtain her PhD from Stony Brook University and become the Chief Rehabilitation Specialist at Methodist Hospital.
My mother recently said “You know your father and I had a joke when you were in college that one day we were going to buy Sheena a beautiful gift just for dealing with your mess”. I know I can be a lot to handle and my college roommate of 4 years has seen it all – the good, the bad and the ugly! I love my Sheena Beena to the moon and back. When we first met at Randolph HS in the 9th grade, I knew she was someone who would be in my life forever. Sheena’s commitment and dedication to succeeding in school honestly got me through college. Seeing her late at night at that desk studying, prompted me to do the same – thanks Sheena! What I love most about Sheena is that she understood my crazy. She got it and never judged me. She’s a huge part to chapter one of “Lee and Chanelle” and can share countless stories of how #ChurchonFriday came to be. Sheena is mommy to my adorable godson Shane and a baby girl on the way!!!
